Laax, Flims and Falera

Flims, Laax and Falera are also called the "Weisse Arena" (white arena) and are known by hikers and bikers in summer as well as skiers and snowboarders in winter. While German is mostly spoken in Flims, Romansh, the forth language of Switzerland, is the official language in Laax and Falera.

Situated on a sunny terrace overlooking the wild Rhine valley, the three mountain resorts of Flims, Laax and Falera are easily reached by car or public transportation and offer a wide choice of activities. Sports play a major role in these mountain resorts.

Friends of the arts also find their share. Das Gelbe Haus (the yellow house) in Flims has regular exhibitions of architecture, photography and art handicrafts. This center of culture, which is not yellow at all but painted white from top to bottom, has won many prizes for its extraordinary architecture. City Excursions in Laax, Flims and Falera

Chur
In just 30 minutes by car or direct public bus (there is no railway station in Flims, Laax nor Falera) you can reach Chur, the capital of the canton of Graubunden. Chur is said to be the oldest city in Switzerland and its Old Town has been restored for the last 20 years and is more or less car free. Visit the Cathedral, built between 1150 and 1272 or step into one of the many beautiful churches.

Bündner Herrschaft (wine region)
Have you ever tasted Swiss wine? Visit one of the most important wine regions in Switzerland, the Bündner Herrschaft with the known wine villages Fläsch, Jenins, Maienfeld and Malans. Join a guided tour and learn about the region and the wine including wine tasting and snacks.

Mountain Excursions in Laax, Flims and Falera

Disentis
"Beinvegni" or welcome to Disentis, one of the few villages where Romansh is still spoken. About 1 ½ hours by bus from Flims/Laax/Falera, Disentis is a place of tradition. The Benedictine Monastery Disentis, which also houses the oldest school of the canton of Graubunden with 200 students, is more than 1300 years old. Nowadays, 30 members live and work in the Monastery. You are invited to join the hourly-prayers.

Vals
Relax in the famous Thermal Springs of Vals, 1 ½ hours by car/bus from Flims/Laax/Falera. Built between 1994-1996 by architect Peter Zumthor, the thermal bath is of ageless quality and simple elegance. Visit this extraordinary place and enjoy this haven of tranquility.

Summer Sports in Laax, Flims and Falera

Not only tourists visit the Flims, Laax and Falera region to hike and bike. Locals prefer this place to do paragliding or delta flying, play tennis, fish, enjoy river rafting or simply walk on the numerous sign-posted trails. Families are especially welcome on the many playgrounds and barbecue areas. The lakes are an attraction for the entire family.

Hiking
Discover the beautiful surroundings on 155 miles (250 km) of marked hiking and theme trails. The view of the Rhine Gorge is just one example of sights to see and if you feel like taking a refreshing bath, you have the choice of three lakes: Lake Cauma, Lake Cresta and Lake Laax.

Biking
Experience the area on two wheels and rent a bike. Leave the map at home and ride along the many marked routes. If your legs are sore from hiking, just rent an Electro Bike and ride through forests and along mountain streams without effort.

Winter Sports in Laax, Flims and Falera

Winter skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing on 35 miles (56 km) marked ski runs, snow-shoe trekking, ice-skating on two natural rice rinks, Bavarian Curling and winter hiking on 50 miles (80 km) of prepared and marked trails are just some of the sports offered.

Skiing/Snowboarding
137 miles (220 km) of slopes guide you through the winter wonderland. The Weisse Arena is one of the most comprehensive winter sports arenas in the Alps, starting at 3609 feet (1100 m) and going up to 9902 ft (3018 m). Snowboarders will not get bored on the biggest halfpipe in Europe and have the choice of two mini boardercrosses and two freestyle parks. Numerous restaurants and ski bars make sure you take a break every now and then and enjoy the local dishes (from gourmet to fast food).

Entertainment in Laax, Flims and Falera

After a hard day of skiing, biking or hiking, make sure to visit the various bars and restaurants, shake a leg to the music, taste wine harvested in the valley, or relax in the Turkish bath of the public swimming center in Laax.

Shopping in Laax, Flims and Falera

There are many small shops offering daily products as well as clothes and souvenirs. For extensive shopping trips it is recommended to take the bus to Chur, just 30 minutes away.

Flims/Laax/Falera is located in the canton of Graubunden, 2 ¼ hours by train and bus from the airport of Zurich or 1 ½ hours by car. It is 30 minutes by bus from the railway station in Chur.
