High-altitude Ski Resorts in Switzerland

Switzerland is situated in the Heart of the Alps where mountain peaks are among the highest and where snow conditions are the most favorable for a memorable ski trip. The small alpine country boasts of several snow-sure resorts which are even a good option for an early or late-season ski vacation. High-altitude resorts provide better snow conditions all season long! Rising global temperatures also tend to affect winter resorts. Warmer winters make low-altitude resorts vulnerable to shortages of snow, are shortening the season and making them a less practical choice for skiing.

Higher elevations are cold enough for more snow to fall and accumulate, ensuring better skiing opportunities throughout the winter season. Powder snow conditions remain for longer and the seasons are longer. A few high-altitude resorts include skiing on glaciers which provide a more reliable base for snow and some allow for year-round skiing. Skiers are better off choosing these high-altitude resorts for the peace of mind that they provide with having more snow and fewer weather-related disruptions.

Zermatt, all year (Icon Pass Resort)
The valley towns of Zermatt and its neighbors Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche (both Italy) are very high and the combined ski resort reaches up to 4000 m above sea level. There are also more than 1000 snow cannons for artificial snow production at the international ski resort. Optimum conditions are found throughout the resort in the winter season. The Theodul Glacier is the largest and highest glacier ski resort in the Alps. 

Zermatt is the famous mountain resort at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn. This fun, car-free town offers not only world-class opportunities for winter and summer outdoor activities such as skiing and hiking, but also scenic mountain train rides to the best Matterhorn viewpoints.

Saas-Fee, from July to April
Saas-Fee offers skiing from mid-July until the end of April. The resort’s glacier makes it possible to ski earlier in the season than most other resorts. The valley runs and the practice slopes in the valley have full snow-making capabilities. This ensures top snow-reliability and best slopes. The slope leading to down to Saas-Fee is usually also open from the end of November.

Saas-Fee is a cozy resort which is situated in the middle of a gigantic mountain panorama. The village is not as famous as its better known neighbor Zermatt and smaller, but just as attractive to ski. And it is car-free too!

Andermatt, from mid November to mid April (Epic Pass Resort)
The ski resort at Gemsstock is very snow-reliable because of its altitude and the North slopes. The slopes from the Gemsstock to Gurschen middle station generally open as early as October. Many times skiers even find top conditions until the middle of May. Snow cannons also guarantee the snow situation. The valley run can usually be skied well from December until April.

Andermatt has a rich past dating back centuries and has recently grown into a fine tourist destination, enticing visitors especially from North America. It is surrounded by magic mountains and nowadays it is one of the hippest resort villages in Switzerland. It is among the larger ski resorts in Switzerland and also features an 18-hole golf course. From Zurich it can be reached by train or by car in about 2 hours.

Arosa-Lenzerheide, from late November to mid April
Most of the slopes in this ski resort have snow-making capabilities. Arosa, in particular, also receives plenty of natural snow as it is among the high-elevation villages of Switzerland. On the Hörnli, the season generally starts in early November. The ski areas of Arosa and Lenzerheide are connected via the Urdenbahn cable car – it takes about 5 minutes to travel from Hörnli in Arosa to Urdenfürggli in Lenzerheide, or vice versa.

Arosa is a classic mountain resort with many restaurants and hotels, situated at the end of the wild Schanfigg Valley in Eastern Switzerland near Chur. Discovered as a health resort in 1883, Arosa opened its first sanatorium in 1888. Some years later, it became a winter resort. The fresh air and beautiful fir forests surrounding the village invite tourists from all over the world – during the summer season as well!

Davos Klosters, from mid November to late April
Davos Klosters has been attracting skiers for generations and gained fame as a hip snowboarding destination. It offers various ski areas and the most important connection slopes have snow-making equipment as well as the valley runs to Davos and Klosters. Due to the elevation, a shortage of snow is very rare at Parsenn area. And Davos is one of the first non-glacier ski resorts to begin the season.

Davos is one of Europe’s oldest mountain resorts and was established as a health resort in 1860. Today Davos is a city way up in the mountains and also famous for the World Economic Forum. Not your average Alpine ski village, but a bustling place, famous for its fresh mountain air, its consistently excellent snow cover and one of the most extensive ski areas in Switzerland.

St. Moritz, from late November to mid April (Icon Pass Resort)
St. Moritz in the Engadin also includes several ski areas, all of which are high-altitude. At Piz Nair ski conditions are very snow-reliable. However, snow cannons are available if there is not sufficient snow. The Lagalb and Diavolezza are then fully open from the middle of December until early April. From then until May, only the Diavolezza area remains open for skiing. The resort’s exposure means that you can still find great powder snow even in March and April. Some slopes also have artificial snow-making capabilities. Skiing the Corvatsch mountain is possible from late November to late April. Snow cannons provide assistance at critical areas. This makes the ski resort very snow-reliable.

St. Moritz is an ultimate ski and jet-set destination – it attracts guests from all over the world who enjoy a modern Alpine lifestyle, top-class restaurants and luxury hotels. The resort lies in the Upper Engadin at a lakeside location and with plenty of sunshine hours.
