Things to do in Andermatt

Old Town

The historic old town includes century old houses, narrow streets and the river Reuss. Traffic is limited and strolling through the old town reminds one of the past where once the Postal Carriages started their journey over the Gotthard Pass. Beautiful patrician houses line the main road through the village and visitors will find cozy cafes, restaurant and small boutique hotels.

New Village

On the other side of the river and close to the train station and the base station of Gemstock you will find the new part of Andermatt. Buildings are designed to resemble different architectural styles of Switzerland and large squares invite to linger. The Radisson SAS Hotel Reussen is the perfect hotel to stay at in the new Village.

Mountain Passes and Touring

Andermatt is ideally situated for touring Switzerland and for crossing the Gotthard Pass – one of the main passage ways over the Alps between Northern and Southern Europe, and of historic significance to travel and trade. Other mountain passes also start in Andermatt and include Furka and Oberalp.

Ursern Valley Museum

The Ursern Museum in Andermatt is located in a beautiful patrician house built in 1786. It opened in 1991 and includes domestic culture, valley and cultural history, tourism, military, Alpine economy and fauna, muleteer trading and the career of Andermatt native ski legend Bernhard Russi.

Sasso San Gottardo Fortress

Once top secret and built to defend Switzerland this military fortress is a unique place in the legendary heart of Switzerland. It is one of the largest and most impressive underground defense structures which can be visited. Open June to October every year.

Glacier Express

Andermatt is approximately the middle of the Glacier Express scenic train ride between St. Moritz and Zermatt. You could interrupt your Glacier Express journey after about 4 hours, and stay in Andermatt for a night! It is probably one of the most famous experiences in Switzerland, providing spectacular panoramic views, and including passages over bridges and through tunnels.

Skiing

The ski area of Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis is the largest in Central Switzerland. It unites three places and offers unlimited snow fun and attractive slopes for every level. The ski lift at Realp is also back in operation - perfect for families as well as ski and snowboard beginners of all ages.
