Meiringen Switzerland - Vacation Guide

Meiringen is a small town in the center of Switzerland. It is located in the Canton of Berne between the four mountain passes of Brünig, Grosse Scheidegg, Susten and Grimsel; and about 30 minutes north-east of Interlaken. Meiringen offers a special mix of Swiss culture and traditions, natural wonders and options for many different activities. And it is very family-friendly!

Meiringen is also surrounded by beautiful mountains – and it is a destination which has not yet been discovered by mass tourism. Just north of Meiringen on Hasliberg, you will find extensive meadows and countless hiking options - the Meiringen-Hasliberg cable car takes you up into unspoiled nature.

Hiking in summer and skiing in winter are the main activities, but by no means all which this attractive region has to offer. Starting at the train station in Meiringen you can take a postal bus up to the Susten, Grosse Scheidegg and Grimsel mountain passes. Or take the train and head up to Brünig Pass. You will find unspoiled nature including Glaciers, meadows and clean rivers which all feed into Lake Brienz.

Things to do in Meiringen

Old Town

Meiringen is a historic town dating back to the Middle Ages. Its population of around 5,000 is mainly living on tourism and farming. Visitors will find a picturesque center with shops, restaurants and hotels. It is also famous for its association with legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. If you are a fan, you can visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum in Meiringen.

Excursions from Meiringen

Aare Gorge
Explore this long narrow river gorge near Meiringen. Formed by thousands of years by Glaciers the water splashes loud and roaring through lime stone formations. Walkways built into rock walls let you get very close to the icy blue water.

Ballenberg
Ballenberg hosts the Swiss Open-Air Museum. On 66 hectares it displays traditional Swiss chalets, partly wooded paths and cares for 250 different farm animals. The Museum Ballenberg with its interactive area is an ideal experience for visitors to uncover the origins of the Swiss lifestyle.

Brienz – Wood Craving
Brienz is a small village on the shores of Lake Brienz where most houses date from the 18th century. The village is famous for its woodcarving tradition and for a small and romantic alley named Brunngasse which once was voted prettiest road in Europe.

Brienzer Rothorn
Leaving from the landing in Brienz, it takes you about 60 minutes by steam train to get up to the Brienzer Rothorn. A summit restaurant invites you to enjoy the views over the Bernese Alps, Lake Brienz and the Grimsel area.

Hasliberg
Hasliberg lies on a south-west facing terrace just north of Meiringen. It is easily reachable by cable car or via road from the Brünig Pass. Hasliberg consists of 4 villages and several peaks and valleys. This family-friendly area awaits visitors with themed hiking trails for all levels for a relaxing vacation in the Swiss mountains.

Rosenlaui
Take a bus in Meiringen towards Schwarzwald Alp, Grosse Scheidegg. Once you gain elevation you will soon get to the wildly romantic Glacier Valley of Rosenlaui. Once a majestic Glacier it is much smaller these days, but still worth a visit. Stop at the historic Hotel Rosenlaui which still offers turn of the century charm and amenities.

Giessbach Falls
The Giessbach Falls are among the most scenic falls in all of Switzerland. Guests can reach the falls and the historic Grand Hotel next to it via boat from Brienz or Interlaken. The Grand Hotel has a beautiful terrace overlooking the lake and the falls.

Gelmersee
Enjoy the fascinating Swiss mountains on a thrilling ride on the steepest open funicular in Europe. You can hike around the Gelmer Lake and take in magnificent panoramic views.

Susten Pass/Stein Glacier
The Susten Pass can be reached via Postal bus, en route to Andermatt. You will find a restaurant and gorgeous photo opportunities of the surrounding mountains and the Stein Glacier. Make sure to stop at the Berghotel Steingletscher and the Alpine Cheesery just behind. Much of this route can also be hiked!

Grindelwald
Famous for the notorious Eiger north face, Grindelwald lays at the foot of Mt. Jungfrau. Take a ride up to Top of Europe, the highest train station in Europe, and experience ice and snow all year around. And from up there, the largest Glacier in Europe is visible too! Ride the Postal Bus one way and return by train and boat!

Meiringen is located in Central Switzerland, 104 km (65 miles) from Zurich and 245 km (153 miles) from Geneva. Travel time to Zurich is 2 hours and to Geneva it takes 3 hours by car or 4 hours by train.
