Things to do in France

Discover France

Lyon, the third-largest city in France, is known for its cultural significance. Located at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon’s architecture blends Roman, Renaissance and modern styles. One of the city’s most unique features are the "Traboules", a series of hidden passageways built during the Renaissance to help silk merchants move through the city. Today, these passageways offer a fascinating glimpse into Lyon’s past. Lyon is also a renowned gastronomic center, often referred to as the culinary capital of France. Visitors can enjoy traditional Lyonnais dishes at typical "Bouchons", small restaurants serving hearty meals like coq au vin.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the French Alps are a must-visit. Chamonix, located at the foot of Mont Blanc, is the highest peak in Western Europe and famous for skiing, snowboarding, and mountaineering. Whether you’re having fun on powdery slopes in winter or exploring alpine trails in summer, this mountain resort offers unforgettable experiences in every season.

Close to Chamonix is the picturesque city of Annecy, often referred to as the "Venice of the Alps“ and renowned for its lovely canals and stunning Lake Annecy. Stroll through medieval cobblestone alleys and savor Savoyard cuisine, including tartiflette and fresh lake fish, for a perfect blend of nature and culture. The lake is a hotspot for water sports, including kayaking and sailing.

France is synonymous with wine and its regions produce some of the finest wines in the world. Bordeaux, in the southwest, is internationally famous for its bold red wines and offers endless opportunities to taste and tour. In eastern France, near Lyon, lies Burgundy, another region renowned for its wine-making tradition and unique terroir. Further north, the Champagne region is the birthplace of the world’s most famous sparkling wine. Only wines produced in this area can legally be called Champagne.

Normandy, in northern France, is a region rich in history and natural beauty. Iconic landmarks include Mont Saint-Michel, an abbey situated on a rocky island just off the coast. At high tide, the island is surrounded by water.

Another landmark is Claude Monet’s house with gardens in Giverny, which inspired his famous water lily paintings. History comes alive at the D-Day Landing Beaches, a tribute to World War II’s pivotal moments.

The Rhône River, a major European waterway, flows from the Swiss Alps to the Mediterranean. It passes through enchanting landscapes and historic cities like Avignon, known for its Papal Palace, and Arles, famous for its Roman ruins and connection to Vincent van Gogh. A Rhône River cruise is a wonderful way to explore the Rhône Valley while taking in breathtaking scenery.

Paris

Paris, the capital of France, is famous for its iconic landmarks, romantic ambiance and cultural treasures. The Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral or the Champs-Elysées attract visitors from around the world. Montmartre with its charming streets and lovely cafes, and the banks of the Seine river add to the city's appeal and invite for exploration. Just a short trip from Paris, the Palace of Versailles offers a glimpse into France’s royal past. This UNESCO World Heritage site features opulent halls, including the Hall of Mirrors, and extensive gardens. Together, Paris and Versailles provide a perfect blend of history, art and culture.

French Riviera - Côte d’Azur

Nice, the jewel of the French Riviera, enchants with its sunny climate, azure waters and vibrant culture. Stroll along the iconic Promenade des Anglais or explore the old town with its lively markets and cafes. The allure of the Côte d’Azur extends to glamorous Cannes, famed for the international Film Festival de Cannes and Saint Tropez, a haven for sandy beaches and chic boutiques. This Mediterranean region offers everything from luxury lifestyle and gourmet cuisine to idyllic coastal landscapes. Whether relaxing or exploring, the French Riviera is the epitome of style and charm.

Provence

This region in southern France captivates visitors with its enchanting landscapes and cultural heritage. Avignon, the historic „City of Popes“, charms with its medieval walls, the majestic Papal Palace and the famous Saint-Bénezet bridge - the Pont d’Avignon. The region's iconic lavender fields, in full bloom in early summer, stretch across rolling hills, filling the air with their scent. Further south, the Camargue offers a unique natural reserve with white horses, pink flamingos, salt flats and extensive wetlands. The harmonious mix of history, colors and untouched nature makes Provence a timeless destination for culture lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Alsace

Alsace is a picturesque French region close to the Swiss border near Basel. Strasbourg, the lively capital, has a beautiful Gothic cathedral and an old town criss-crossed by canals, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Petite France district, once home to millers, tanners and fishermen, is now a Strasbourg landmark. Colmar, often referred to as a "fairytale town“, delights visitors with its well-preserved half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets. The Alsace region is also known for its wines, especially the crisp, aromatic white wines such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer and the sparkling "Crémant d’Alsace". During the holiday season, Alsace becomes a festive wonderland, hosting some of Europe’s most magical Christmas markets, featuring festive lights, arts and crafts and seasonal treats.
