Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne is one of the largest lakes of Switzerland. The lake basin is filled with deep-blue water and surrounded by famous mountain peaks such as Mt. Rigi, Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Stanserhorn. Together with picturesque villages and the city of Lucerne on its shores it makes for a compelling destination which should be part of any Switzerland itinerary.

Situated in Central Switzerland and in the heartland of the country, Lake Lucerne extends among the Cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Lucerne. The longest stretch between the City of Lucerne and Flüelen is 38km. It is one of the most visited vacation areas of Switzerland. Swiss and foreigners alike appreciate the different landscape with lake and mountains, the diverse landscape and the many sights one can visit.

The fleet consists of 21 passenger ships, including five historical paddle steamers, and is operated by Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Vierwaldstättersee. Year-round, you can make all kinds of boat rides on the large lake. The main boat terminal is right behind the Lucerne train station. You will quickly see it once you step out of the station building.

Every ship offers drinks and smaller hot and cold dishes for purchase. Larger ships and the all historic lake steamer feature a full size restaurant. Special Lunch, Culinary- and Sunset Cruises are available during main season. Savor the flavors of freshly cooked seasonal dishes prepared with wholesome regional dishes!

Mountains around Lake Lucerne
The most visited excursion destinations around Lake Lucerne are the various mountain peaks. Mt. Rigi invites with spectacular 360˚ views over the lake and surrounding mountains. Mt. Pilatus offers latest generation rail cars and features the steepest cog train in the world. The views from Hammetschwand on Bürgenstock over the lake are magnificent. And the Stanserhorn impresses with its CabriO, an open-top cable car. And Klewenalp offers countless hiking paths.

Other Tips for visiting Lake Lucerne
The lake is large and invites to make cruises between villages and or from one extreme to the other. Take a long ride such as the one from Lucerne to Flüelen and enjoy a delicious meal on board of a lake steamer. In Flüelen you can connect with the Gotthard Panorama Express and ride the train to the southern and Italian speaking Canton of Ticino. Standard boat rides are included with the Swiss Pass and the Tell Pass. Consider making a day trip out of Lucerne to nearby highlights such as the village of Weggis or the Schiller Stone towards the end of the lake.
