Stanserhorn

The journey to Stanserhorn starts on the veteran funicular to the Kälti middle station, where you board the world’s first cable car with an open-air deck. While you marvel at the landscape with the wind in your hair, the so-called “CabriO” takes you to the summit, a mountain peak in central Switzerland at an altitude of 1848m.

Arriving at Stanserhorn, you can take in the spectacular views of the Alps and Ten Swiss Lakes, discover the varied flora of the region on a 30-minute hike around the peak and visit “Murmeli Park”, a small mountain marmot zoo where you can watch the adorable animals up close.

If you’re up for some adventure, you can book a hang gliding tandem flight: Fly like a bird over the Lake Lucerne area and experience a unique view in 20-60 minutes before arriving in the valley near Stans. For those who prefer to relax there’s a terrace with comfortable lounge chairs and a panoramic restaurant with a revolving floor, allowing guests to view the 360° panorama in 43 minutes.

Free with Swiss Travel Pass

Holders of a Swiss Travel Pass or a validated Swiss Flex Pass can take the Stanserhorn excursion for free.

Route to Stanserhorn

Stans can be reached by train from Lucerne in 25 minutes. From the train station in Stans it’s a 5-minute walk to the Stanserhorn valley station. Or you can board a boat from Lucerne to Stansstad and continue by train to Stans.

Duration of Excursion

We recommend at least half a day for the excursion. It takes 25 minutes by train from Lucerne to Stans, and 75 minutes by boat and train via Stansstad. From the valley station in Stans, it takes 24 minutes to the top of the mountain.

Timetable

Operates from April – November, approx. 2 cable cars per hour. In high season, the cable car operates with 10-minute interval departures.

Preparation         

Good walking shoes, hat and sunglasses are recommended when visiting Stanserhorn. Since it’s generally a bit cooler than in the valley, we recommend to dress in layers or to bring a windbreaker jacket. Consider checking local weather forecasts for days with clear visibility.

Stanserhorn is located in the Canton of Nidwalden, near to the border with Obwalden, and can be reached from the village of Stans.
