Schynige Platte

Take a mountain excursion on the historic cogwheel train to the top of the Schynige Platte (“plateau”). The vintage train from Wilderswil via Breitlauenen Alp to Schynige Platte will take you back in time for a ride with spectacular scenery, complete with wooden benches. Enjoy beautiful views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountain range. Visit the Alpine garden, and enjoy an authentic Swiss meal at the panorama restaurant.

Schynige Platte is also an excellent area to hike. There are many options for all types of hikers. You will be amazed by the beauty of the panorama including the Swiss Flower & Panorama trail. You will find yourself in the middle of the rich alpine flora led by the path through alpine meadows and pasture.

Route to Schynige Platte

Take the train from Interlaken Ost to Wilderswil, then take the cogwheel train to Schynige Platte right across the Wilderswil station.

Duration of excursion

We recommend allowing for at least one hour at the summit. The Schynige Platte excursion can be done in half a day, but we recommend allowing for a full day if you wish to do any hiking while you are there.

Timetable

Operates during the summer months only, from end of May until mid October.

Preparation

Pack sun glasses, sun screen and good walking shoes. Bring a wind breaker and dress in layers. Weather in the mountains can change on short notice.

Location and Map

Schynige Platte is located in the Bernese Oberland. Wilderswil is only 3 km/2 miles from Interlaken and approx. 59 km/37 miles from the city of Bern. It takes approx. 1 hour 15 minutes from Interlaken to Schynige Platte to reach the top, and about 2 hours 30 minutes from Berne.
