A Rustic Dairy Experience at the Emmentaler Cheese Factory
by Veronica Reyes, November 7, 2024
Switzerland’s countryside holds its own unique charm, with activities that immerse you in Swiss culture. And in this blog post, I would like to share my experience visiting the Emmental cheese factory – a perfect way to savor the traditions and flavors of Switzerland!

During this time of the year, Switzerland begins to wind down, leaving behind the summer crowds to prepare for the winter flair. But this doesn’t mean a visit to this Alpine gem is not worth it. While the weather can be unpredictable, Swiss cities remain lively year-round, making them jump on your list of destinations to visit. However, the countryside holds its own unique charm, with activities that immerse you in Swiss culture.

We started this excursion from Berne by private bus and the journey took us 45 minutes. However, you can also get to the renowned Cheese factory by using public transportation. You will first take the train to Hasle-Rüegsau and then continue with the bus 471 to Affoltern im Emmental, Dorf – the total transfer time will take you about 1 hour.

In summer, you can cycle through the scenic Swiss countryside where rolling hills, charming villages, and lush green landscapes lead to the birthplace of one of Switzerland’s most famous cheeses. Regardless of the method of transportation you use, the scenery is breathtaking!

On the guided tour, we were greeted by an expert in cheese production, whose passion for what he does was immediately evident. He took us through the fascinating history of cheese, tracing its origins and explaining how it became an integral part of Swiss life, especially in this region. We learned how cheesemaking traditions have been passed down through generations, shaping both the culture and economy of this area.

By the end of the tour, it became clear to me that cheese is much more than just a culinary delight or a symbol of Swiss culture – it represents a deep-rooted connection to the land and the people who produce it. The methods used, the attention to detail, and the care that goes into every wheel of cheese tell a story of craftsmanship, and pride. Standing in that factory, I realized that each of these golden wheels is a testament to centuries of tradition and a celebration of Swiss heritage.

Finally, we had a tasting of the cheeses produced in this factory and we were able to buy souvenirs to remember this beautiful experience!
The Emmentaler Schaukäserei has lodging, a restaurant where they also offer brunch service, workshops, visit the surroundings in horse-drawn carriage, among many more. More info can be found directly on their official website and if you would like us to include this experience in one of your packages, we would be happy to do so 🙂
