Bern Like a Local: Designing the Perfect 3-Night Stay in Switzerland’s Most Livable Capital
By Sara Werren, April 16, 2026.
Bern is often seen as a quick train stop between Zurich and the Bernese Oberland. Many travelers pass through or stop only for a few hours before continuing their journey. However, the capital of Switzerland has a lot to offer. Let our travel experts guide you to the perfect Bern stay.
With its central location, Bern is an excellent base for day trips to destinations such as Lucerne, Basel, or Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region (and often less expensive). One big advantage of staying in Bern is how well it connects to the rest of Switzerland. Trains are frequent, efficient, and reliable. Within an hour, you can reach lakes, mountain regions, and charming towns without much planning.
At the same time, returning to Bern in the evening after a day trip feels relaxing. The city doesn’t have the intensity of larger hubs, which is ideal for longer stays and for travelers who like to take it slow. It offers a meaningful immersion, and a more authentic experience beyond the main tourist routes. Fun fact: Bernese people are known in Switzerland for their slower pace of life and once you spend some time here, you’ll quickly understand why.
A city that works without much planning
One of the first things you will notice about Bern is how everything is in walking distance. The Old Town was built on a loop above the Aare River and everything connects naturally. You don’t need public transport or a strict plan, the city center can easily be explored by foot. Stretching for kilometers, the arcades are one of Bern’s most practical and iconic features allowing you to explore comfortably in any weather.
What makes Bern special is that you never feel pressured to see it all. You can walk through the same streets more than once and still discover new details such as small paintings, hidden corners, or architectural elements you didn’t notice before. The city’s sandstone buildings also give it a very distinct and warm atmosphere.
In the heart of the Old City, a guided tour of the Zytglogge (Clock Tower) is a must for history buffs. While the exterior of the astronomical clock is famous for its hourly mechanical puppet show, the guided tour takes you inside the tower. You’ll climb the ancient stone steps to stand among the heavy weights and whirring gears of the 15th-century clockwork. Standing behind the massive clock face provides not only a fascinating look at medieval engineering but also one of the most unique vantage points overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage streets below.
Bern truly works well for different types of travelers because it doesn’t require a set itinerary and allows a relaxed pace. Couples enjoy the calm, cozy atmosphere and relaxed evenings while families benefit from the walking and child friendly activities and many playgrounds. Our team will help you move around the city to find the local gems.
To experience Bern like a true local, you have to get on the water. Aarebootsfahrten (rafting trips down the Aare River) are a summer rite of passage. Typically starting in Thun and ending in Bern, these excursions allow you to drift lazily past lush forests and historic estates in an inflatable boat. The water is crystalline and glacial, and there is nothing quite like the perspective of the city as you float toward the shadow of the Parliament building. The Marzili area is among the popular spots, especially for first-time swimmers. It offers easy access to the water and designated exit points. The Aare is a natural river coming from the Alps and with strong currents, so it’s important to be cautious and well-prepared.
In the colder months, the river becomes quiet, and the walking paths along the water are ideal for longer, peaceful strolls. Some locals even continue the swimming tradition year-round with cold-water plunges, often combined with visits to nearby Finnish sauna facilities.
Find below an itinerary suggestion to discover Bern like a local:
Day 1: Stroll around and enjoy some unparalleled views
Arrive in Bern and take time to walk through the Old Town. Stroll under the arcades and pass by key landmarks such as the Federal Palace and the Münster (cathedral). Enjoy a coffee at the Einstein au Jardin Café in the cathedral’s park, and enjoy panoramic views of the mountains, the river and the city. You can also climb the Münster tower for a unique experience and even better views. Enjoy the evening at Bärenplatz, right next to the Parliament. The area offers a wide selection of restaurants from traditional Swiss cuisine to Italian, Indian, or Asian options, all within a short walking distance and also visited by locals.
Day 2: Experience the city with its house mountain
Start your day with a visit to Bern’s “house mountain”: Gurten. It’s only about 15 minutes from the city center by tram, followed by a short funicular ride to the top. From here, you’ll have panoramic views over the city and surroundings. There are also several restaurants and plenty of space to walk or relax. For families, Gurten Park is absolutely worth a visit due to the big playground, the summer toboggan and the miniature railway, with guaranteed fun for everyone. If you enjoy walking, you can head back down through the forest. Continue towards Eichholz, which leads you directly to the Aare River. From here, a scenic 45-minute walk along the river brings you back to Bern. As you approach the center, you’ll reach the Marzili. In summer, this is the ideal place to try floating in the Aare – just remember to be cautious and use proper equipment such as a floating bag. In winter, this area is perfect for a quiet riverside walk. Nearby, you’ll also find one of the most popular ice cream spots in the city: Gelateria di Berna. Queueing might take 10–15 minutes in summer, but the special seasonal flavors and the quality of the ice cream make it well worth the wait. From there, continue to the Schwellenmätteli, which offers a unique perspective of the city from below. Then follow the path towards the Bear Park and continue your way up to the Rose Garden, providing a wonderful restaurant with panoramic views. This is definitely one of the best view points in Bern and THE place to watch the sunset over the Old Town.
Day 3: Take a day trip to Thun or the Bernese Oberland
Bern is perfectly located near Bernese Oberland and Thun, a lakeside town with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, just a 20 minutes rail journey away. In Thun, you can visit the historic castle, wander around the charming Old Town, take a lake cruise, or spend time by the lake and the Aare River. Swimming is very enjoyable in both. A highlight is Schloss Schadau located in a large park by the lake. The castle operates as a hotel and restaurant, with a terrace offering views of the water and mountains. It’s a great place for a relaxed lunch or even a picnic in the surrounding park. In the late afternoon, return to Bern and enjoy some free time. If you still feel like exploring, head into neighborhoods like Länggasse, Lorraine, or Breitenrain. These areas are known for their cute cafés, small shops, and relaxed evening vibes.
Day 4: Get some souvenir before departure
On your final day, take time to enjoy Bern one last time. If your visit falls on a market day, stroll through the markets at Bärenplatz or Bundesplatz near the Parliament. Before leaving, stop by Confiserie Glatz to buy a local specialty: the “Mandelbärli” a traditional almond pastry in bear form which is a Bernese favorite and makes for a great souvenir. This itinerary is designed to be easily embedded into an existing Switzerland package, with the flexibility to adapt it to your travel style and pace. Any day excursion such as a visit to Lucerne, Basel, Zurich, Interlaken area or Montreux can be added to your preference. This way you can make the best out of your stay in Switzerland without having to pack and unpack your luggage daily, offering you a great immersion.
